Desolate Song

Regrets
Running like a cold slumber
Sometimes steal my mind with
An infinite variety of might-have-been's
Could-still-be's

Your farewell was a slow and desolate song
The lyrics both tragic and sweet

I felt your eyes dancing precarious rhythmic steps
Regretting the words you speak

Dark flows of mournful wind moved in time with your departing song
Dancing among us
Writhing and winding
Tearing love apart

I tried to respond but weariness seeped into my words
And I shuddered with disbelief as sorrow swirled around my feet

An endless outflow of pain and anguish still consumes me
And affliction resonates to the regrets of your long ago song
Opening wounds in me I refuse to acknowledge

Wispy patches of winter mist linger in the shadows of my tears
Damp glittering suffering
Cascading down my face

Hold me in my dreams again
Don't fade away when the morning draws near

How can I be strong
When I have no one to cry to?
